Training for new volunteers

If you fancy joining the Preston FM team as a presenter, producer or journalist, then you'll be interested in the next round of training courses for new volunteers, which starts in January 2011. The courses are designed for people new to Preston FM and give you the chance to learn all about community radio - from the knobs and buttons in the studio, through to how to prepare and present an interesting radio programme.

Once you've completed the course, you can then continue to volunteer with Preston FM (if you want to) as a regular presenter, community journalist, production role or in some other way. All courses are free, and we can cover travel and childcare expenses whilst you're volunteering with us in most circumstances.

There are three courses to choose from - all covering the same content:

COURSE 1 - 10am-5pm on Sat 22nd, Sun 23rd, Sat 29th and Sun 30th January

COURSE 2 - 10am-5pm, on Sat 5th, Sun 6th, Sat 12th and 13th February

COURSE 3 - (Reserved for Under 25 year olds) 5pm-7pm on Tue 25th, Thu 27th Jan, Tue 1st Feb, Thu 3rd Feb, Tue 8th Feb, Thu 10th Feb, Tue 15th Feb and Thu 17th Feb

To apply for a place on one of the courses, please give us a call (01772 880791) or e-mail ( neild@prescap.co.ukThis e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it ). Let us know which of the courses you're interested in. You need to be registered with us, which you can do online using our on-line registration form.

The deadline for applying is 5pm on Monday 10th January 2011. We'll get in touch with you as soon as possible after that to let you know whether we can offer you a place on a course.

My Last Fresh on Air Show

Well that is it. After the hicups and gremlins it is all done. Lizzie joined me at the Discovery Center at Garstang and we had alot of fun recording the show. There are no edits, it is as live as a pre-record can get. The truth be known, I have not mastered editing.
I used to work in Garstang for Lux at the Green Lane depot. Although I had to travel 32 odd miles a day to get there and back it was so much more different than London. It was my first job since moving to Preston.
And now Garstang is part of another milestone in my life.

Gonna have to buy my own headphones and perhaps a good cd player..

Lizzie and myself have a regular show now, it starts in October on the 15th, a Friday and is on every 4 weeks between 6 - 7 pm..

Introducung Moor Park, the next venue...

Moor Park is one the oldest and Prestons largest Park

It boasts 8 football pitches, 4 bowling greens, tennis courts, cricket wickets and 2 childrens play areas.

There are available cricket and football pavilions.

Another feature is the Serpentine Lake, set against thriving woodland.

Next to the lake is the Summer House and it has a mural painted by the students of Moor Park High School as part of the Art in the Park Project.

A car park is available opp. PNE on Deepdale Road.

Another feature is the Observatory; we will talk about that later.

Moor Park was originally common land derived from the Forrest of Fulwood by the Charter of King Henry 3rd in 1235

Known as Preston Moor, the area has been the centre of many of the towns historical and memorable events.

In 1642, a meeting was held on the Moor, attended by 5,000 people or more to hear the reading of the Kings Commission of Array. A disagreement broke out between the KINGS SUPPORTERS and those who favoured the PARLIAMENTARY SIDE.
A precursor to the hostilities that broke out all over the country.

Between 1736 and 1833 (nearly 100 years), an annual horse race was held. It was started at a large stone which is still there today.

The municipal Park was one of the first in these new industrial towns and was created in 1833 by enclosing 100 acres of Preston Moor, renaming it Moor Park
The Park was landscaped by Edward Milner; he also was involved in the designs of Avenham, Miller and Grange Parks.
The work was carried out by the unemployed cotton workers at the height of the cotton famine.
The total cost, a little over 10,500 pounds.

The sporting facilities encouraged a cricket team to hire them in 1867. The team was Preston Nelson, better known as PNE. A move to Deepdale Farm across Deepdale Road, changing from cricket to rugby and football marked the start or the Towns historic football team.

In 1907 Moor Park opened the “Preston Open Air Baths” to relieve the pressure on Saul Street Baths during the summer, it closed in the 1970.

During the First World War the park became the site for a hospital for the war wounded. At its peak the hospital treated 1000 men or more a year and closed in 1919.
During the Second World War it was the site of a Prisoner of War Camp, it is believed no one ever escaped from there.

The Jeremiah Horrocks Observatory was built by Preston Council, just in time for the 1927 Total Eclipse of the Sun of which it was reported that 30,000 people or more came to see at the park.
It was named after Jeremiah Horrocks, he was the first guy to observe the transit of Venus across the sun.
He was from Liverpool but lived near Preston after he left Cambridge.
The telescope is an 8 inch Thomas Cooke Refractor obtained in 1912.

Recently, in 1997, Tom Benson became the new World Record Champion Distance Walker by walking around the park for a total of 314 miles, beating the previous record by 5 miles.

The drainage was improved on the football pitches in 2003 – 2004 and after a fire which destroyed the old pavilion a new one was built and the new facilities were opened by Sir Tom Finney in May 2005.

In May 2007 the park played host to Radio Ones Big Week End. Attended by over 35,000 people from around the country.

Bridging the Paranormal in Garstang

During the English Civil war (do you mind if I shoot you, well I do rather) GREENHALG Castle was besieged by Cromwell and his troops.

A member of the Cromwellian force was PETER “Hallelujah” BROUGHTON. A nickname given to him because he would shriek “Hallelujah” as he charged into battle.

In August 1644, Peter was enjoying an evening stroll. He paused at GUBBERFORD BRIDGE to watch the river gently flow over the large rocks below.

His gaze was diverted by a woman dressed in whit walking towards him.

As she drew nearer he was shocked to see that it was his wife who had left him 5 years earlier.

She too recognized him and embraced him.

The embrace was short lived as suddenly, from the bushes a man leapt forward and mortally wounded her with a knife.

The assassin, was a Cavalier by the name of RUPERT ROWTON.

Mr. ROWTON and Mrs. BROUGHTON had met and fallen in love and they married bigamously.

She had also been having a relationship with Captain LORD ALBIN, another Cavalier and on the day of her death had been on her way to meet him at the OLD HOLLY TREE INN.

After she died, the two husbands decided to keep the murder of their shared wife a secret and buried her on the Banks of the WYRE RIVER.

It is said that in August, each year her spirit comes to the GUBBERFORD area in search of her two husbands.

There is another bridge that has a grim tale…

Garstang Bridge is said to be haunted.

A woman was murdered there and extracts her revenge by standing by the road side with a hood covering her face.

When approached she reveals the white skull that is now her face.

And another haunting happens at the nearby St.Michaels Bridge.

Maybe better to wade across the Wyre….

What made you come to Preston?

I am gonna do a bit on why I came to Preston in one of my 3 shows. These I will let you know in the very near future.
I came to Preston with my new girlfriend back in 2004. We moved into a friend of hers near Miller Park and I was lucky enough to get a job within a couple of weeks.
We got our own rented place in Penwortham some weeks later after my partner got work.
I have had only three jobs since leaving London.
In London I worked in Day care centres, some pubs here and there, worked within the film industry and the bingo and cinema trades.
You will find out more during the shows...

If you want to leave a comment, perhaps describing why you are in Preston and what brought you here please feel free. They all will be read, some replied and some read out on air...

Thanx

A riverside residence.

The picture above is The River Ribble and I was standing on the old footbridge when taking this photo.
The Ribble is an important river and has helped to make Preston with its growth throughout the years.
We were off to the Preston Mela, a celebration of Asian culture here in the North West and a fantastic festival. Excellent food and excellent folk.

We turned to continue over the bridge and was confronted with the image below.

Judging by the looks of things this person has stayed here a while. We wondered where they may have been now and what they were doing, did they have a full belly or has life dealt them such cards as to lie somewhere fueling an internal struggle with alcohol or drugs.
Lizzie always tries to give something to these folk she sees, I sometimes think it may not be the right thing to do, but I know until there is a viable alternative, we may be forced to. With the government wielding a huge axe cutting budgets and changing folks lives, as if we were being punished for not voting for them in the past I really do fear for these folk myself.
Many I have met have had problems, unable to get on at school, a chalenging childhood, a breakdown or rejection. Many have some sort of difficulty within, some cannot read or write, some have mental illnesses and some lost all hope.
If we are able to help these folk through these times then help we should. I myself had been in such a place for a short while. It takes a long time to climb back. I was lucky and had been given a break and was able too to see what it meant. I was also lucky to have met Lizzie. Very lucky.

Are You A Shetlander in Preston?

Do you come fae Shetland? An ex-pat of the Ultima Thule?

Here on PrestonFM 103.2 I plan to start a show for you.

This is the year of Hamefaring

Every 25 years the people of Shetland throw an open invitation to all folk who have links with family within Shetland.
I will be going twice so I could give you a taste of the reels, yarns and anticts of the Guizer Yarl and his Up Helly AA Squad.

There are many events going on, I know sometimes folk cannot make it so let us bring a wee bit of Shetland to Preston.

Are there any groups of folk who meet?

I can come and have a yarn and tell of all the folk I know.

One you all may know of was a dear friend of mine and my family.

Rhoda Bulter

She and Dennis lived next door to my Grannie and Grandad.

Preston Mela

Went to see the shows at Preston Mela. It was looking good, although there was a threat of rain there were a good number of folk there at 1.30. thr PrestonFM tent was up at the top of the hill overlooking the whole event. There were roving reporters and a recording booth to alow folk to say what they think.
Avenham Park is a fantastic venue for music events. It is a large bowl shaped green, looking at the river from the top of the bowl at the Winkley Square entrance you do get a good view of things and the sound carries very well to the top, even throught the shrubbery. To the right are the oriental gardens and in the dizzy hights East Cliff with the old Preston Hotel builing with its looming Victorian Watch Tower. Towards the river, still on the right is the new Pavilion. A building worthy of an award me thiks. Open most days with a community space and a cafe.
We had to leave after a short while, I will post some images as soon as I upload from my camera.

Sadly the images were not really very good. Sorry

Welcome

Hi and welcome to this blog.

I hope to track my progress through PrestonFM.

I applied for a production course and made the grade.

We all made it to PrestonFM HQ opposite the Wellie and was introduced to out tutor, Darren and eachother.

The 1st day was about the basics. how to conduct ourselves and the finer points of PrestonFM

Day two we got to work the desks and was show the better ways of starting features, interviews and a bit more nittygritty.

Day three we produced a half hour show. My partner was Sarah, she knows a bout holidays and I know a little.

Our show was split with 2 features. Sarah on her recent holiday experienc and me about Shetland as a holiday destination.
